Why we built Torte around people, not dates
A calendar tells you when. It never tells you who matters. That distinction shaped every screen in the app.
Most birthday tools start from the calendar. You get a grid of days, a dot on the 22nd, and a notification when the dot arrives. It works, in the narrow sense that you are told something happened.
We started from the other end. The first screen we sketched was not a month view — it was a person.
A date is a row. A person is a story.
When you open someone in Torte, you see more than their birthday. You see how old they are turning, the notes you have kept about them, the other dates that matter in your shared history. The birthday is one event among several, attached to someone you care about.
That shift sounds cosmetic. It changed everything downstream: reminders carry context, the events list reads like a timeline of people rather than a to-do list, and groups let you think about family and friends as the circles they really are.
What we left out
We did not build a social feed, a gift marketplace, or anything that needs your friends to sign up. Torte is for you and your memory. The people in it never have to know it exists — they just notice that you showed up.
